Larne Visit to EU Transport Commissioner

The EU Commission Office in Northern Ireland reports that: "European Commissioner for Transport, Jacques Barrot, travels to Larne on Thursday 2 June to talk to the local council and elected representatives about the Larne to Belfast rail link. The rail link forms part of the Trans-European Transport Network linking to Belfast, Dublin and Cork.Ahead of the visit, Mr Barrot who is also a Vice-President of the European Commission, said: “I am looking forward to my first visit to Northern Ireland. It will give me a chance at first hand to discuss the implementation of the Trans-European link and to see what progress is being made in upgrading the link.” During his visit to Northern Ireland, the French Commissioner will also meet Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Shaun Woodward MP, to discuss a range of transport issues. The visit will finish at Belfast Central Station where the Commissioner will have the chance to see how EU funding has contributed to modernising Northern Ireland’s public transport network, including investment in new buses and trains and the refurbishment of the station." Nicholson will welcome the visit of Jacques Barrot More here

Northern Ireland Railways began a nine-month, £25.2 million engineering project to relay the railway line between Bleach Green and Whitehead in March 2005. The project is co-financed by the EU from the Trans-European Transport Networks Fund.

"During our talks last year with the European Commission on the Trans European Networks (TENs), Cllr Roy Beggs and I issued an invitation to the Transport Commissioner to visit Larne, which for Northern Ireland is a vital part of the TENs programme. We are delighted that Vice-President Barrot who is Commissioner responsible for transport has taken up our invitation. Mr. Barrot's willingness to come to Northern Ireland to see our transport infrastructure for himself is a clear demonstration of the Commissions commitment to Northern Ireland."

Mr. Nicholson added that he and his fellow Northern Ireland MEP Jim Allister were continuing to work together at EU level to ensure that Northern Ireland could derive maximum benefit from the TENs programme.

In an official communique, Jim Allister said: "Today’s visit of the Transport Commissioner presents an opportunity to press home Northern Ireland’s acute infrastructural needs. In my discussions with Commissioner Barrow I intend to do so. In this regard I have prepared the attached Briefing paper which I will deliver to him.
Northern Ireland has lost out substantially in EU funding because of the decision that access to the Cohesion Fund would be based on national rather than regional criteria. Thus Northern Ireland has never been able to qualify for one penny of Cohesion funding, which is directed at addressing infrastructural needs on transport and environmental needs.
The Republic of Ireland, on the other hand, has benefited massively, having drawn down over 1Billion Euro for transport needs and the same again for water and sewerage plants. I, therefore, intend to press with Mr Barrot the severe infrastructural deficit which Northern Ireland has been left to address, without EU aid, because of Brussels’ restrictive criteria on Cohesion Funding"
